The milkman used to arrive in a cart pulled by a horse...do you remember?  Probably my first encounter with a four-legged animal bigger than a dog.  As a small girl living beside a busy main road in the heart of a smoky northern town I can remember desperately wanting to be near the big russet-brown horse pulling along his cart filled with clanking tingling milk-bottles.  Back then it didn't seem in the least incongruous that a horse should be walking along tarmac roads, hemmed in on either side by buildings cheek-by-jowl with belching lorries and screeching machinery.  Horses were still a feature of the working day then.  There aren't many around any more. Not in the delivery business anyway, superseded by electric sparks, although I do get a thrill when a UPS vehicle drives up our avenue, only because it reminds me of New York,  that lovely brown colour with gold writing...mimicking the horse and the brass?

I know what you mean. When I was living in what was then West Berlin in the mid 70's, the Schultheiss brewery made local deliveries within a certain distance from their brewery with a wagon and a pair of beautiful butterscotch Belgians. Such gorgeous animals. It was always a special treat to see them pulling the bierwagon

There's something about a delivery truck/wagon.... even Fed Ex can stir a bit of excitement on a country road like mine. I think of Castaway, the film with Tom Hanks, and that delivery truck that brought all the world. Milk delivered by a horse drawn wagon would be a magical and wonderful way to live even now.

I do remember our home dairy delivery but sadly it was by truck...
Now with the realism that we are quickly destroying the air we breathe I have discovered the tilling of a few local fields by horse-team...
And what a grand sight they are too, a pair of big Morgans clopping through the freshly turned earth enjoying their outing.

I am so sorry to have been away from you for so long Jane. I hope you get some relief soon. It is so difficult not feeling well. It just seems to put a cloud over everything. So today I'm sending you sunshine like you did when you left your sweet note for me. I loved this post. Even though our milk was not brought by horseback in the city I grew up in, I do remember that it was delivered by the kindest man in his tiny white truck. And then when we moved to the farm, my father milked the cow and brought the milk in every morning and night. There was something wonderful about owning your own cow, because my mother would make ice cream every other night and we have fresh whipped cream on everything.
I see that you have been enjoying the beautiful peonies in your garden. My own are just coming on now and I am snapping pictures everyday so I can gaze on them through the long Winter.lol!
sending hugs from here...
